{"id":993,"date":"2010-12-31T21:00:42","date_gmt":"2011-01-01T05:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=993"},"modified":"2010-12-31T21:00:42","modified_gmt":"2011-01-01T05:00:42","slug":"2010-books","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=993","title":{"rendered":"2010 Books"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just posted my last capsule reviews for 2010, and looked back at the list of books I read this year.\u00a0 I read 44 books this year, less than one a week, but still a fairly healthy number.\u00a0 And it doesn&#8217;t count comics.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to pick a few that were particularly good and say a few words about them, but that&#8217;s proving to be hard.\u00a0 I read a lot of really great books this year. I&#8217;m going to throw out a few links to some of the stuff I enjoyed the most.<\/p>\n<p>In non fiction, this was the year I was blown away by Kevin Roose&#8217;s incredible <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=849\"><em>The Unlikely Disciple<\/em><\/a>, found out a ton about the recent Wall Street shenanigans in Michael Lewis&#8217;s excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=932\"><em>The Big Short<\/em><\/a>, saw how a serial killer and the World&#8217;s Fair danced an abstract tango in Erik Larson&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=637\"><em>The Devil in the White City<\/em><\/a>, heard a rational plea for coming to terms with our finite planet from Jared Diamond in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=685\"><em>Collapse<\/em><\/a>, and became a Chuck Klosterman fan by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=843\"><em>Eating the Dinosaur<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I read more fiction than usual this year.\u00a0 Partially this was because I discovered Raymond Chandler (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=739\"><em>The Big Sleep<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=817\"><em>The Long Goodbye<\/em><\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=837\"><em>Farewell, My Lovely<\/em><\/a>) and renewed my interest in Dick (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=664\"><em>The Man in the High Castle<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=677\"><em>A Scanner Darkly<\/em><\/a>) and Atwood (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=641\"><em>The Year of the Flood<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=652\"><em>Oryx and Crake<\/em><\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=656\"><em>The Handmaid&#8217;s Tale<\/em><\/a>).\u00a0 I also got sucked into the <em>Twilight<\/em> thing, knocking off <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=702\">all<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=718\">four<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=733\">constituent<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=744\">books<\/a> in pretty short order.\u00a0 I also finally read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=830\"><em>The Grapes of Wrath<\/em><\/a>, which is a towering work of literature, and found Lionel Shriver&#8217;s spectacular <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=942\"><em>We Need to Talk About Kevin<\/em><\/a>, a harrowing mirror held up to both the reader and the world.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a pretty good year by my standards, and there are other fun things that didn&#8217;t quite make a mention here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I just posted my last capsule reviews for 2010, and looked back at the list of books I read this year.\u00a0 I read 44 books this year, less than one a week, but still a fairly healthy number.\u00a0 And it doesn&#8217;t count comics.
