{"id":989,"date":"2010-12-31T19:59:29","date_gmt":"2011-01-01T03:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=989"},"modified":"2010-12-31T19:59:29","modified_gmt":"2011-01-01T03:59:29","slug":"review-shopgirl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=989","title":{"rendered":"Review: Shopgirl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Steve Martin released this novella, <em>Shopgirl<\/em>, in 2000 well before he wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/BBC\/mouldering08.html#m08-b\"><em>Born Standing Up<\/em><\/a>, but there is considerable similarity between them.\u00a0 In both cases, the work is thoughtful and well executed, but strangely unmoving.\u00a0 However, <em>Born Standing Up<\/em> relates a particular man&#8217;s singular experience becoming a unique entertainer while <em>Shopgirl<\/em> sticks much closer to the everyday.\u00a0 As a result, there is less to divert the reader from the inertia.<\/p>\n<p>After saying that Martin has trouble building up an emotional punch, I cannot really lay my fingers on what is missing.\u00a0 There are characters with motivations and back stories, a strong sense of place, clear economical prose with a distinct voice, observations on people from different times of life and how they relate.\u00a0 This should rise into a nice cake; but it doesn&#8217;t, and I don&#8217;t know why.<\/p>\n<p>I have read a lot of books that provoked strong dislike.\u00a0 <em>Shopgirl<\/em> was not one of those.
