{"id":363,"date":"2008-09-11T17:46:54","date_gmt":"2008-09-12T01:46:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=363"},"modified":"2008-09-11T17:46:54","modified_gmt":"2008-09-12T01:46:54","slug":"into-the-longbox-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=363","title":{"rendered":"Into the longbox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Will Eisner&#8217;s The Spirit #20<\/em>, Aragones, Evanier, Smith, Wong.\u00c2\u00a0 As critical as I&#8217;ve been of these guys, I have to admit this issue was enjoyable.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a nice, quirky mystery featuring the Spirit cast in all their likable glory.\u00c2\u00a0 Not a world changing story, but a fun way to pass some time.\u00c2\u00a0 Nicely done.<\/p>\n<p><em>Gravel #3 &amp; #4<\/em>, Ellis, Wolfer, Jimenez.\u00c2\u00a0 I thought I&#8217;d talked about issue 3, but I don&#8217;t see the comments.\u00c2\u00a0 This probably isn&#8217;t for me.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m just not drawn into the world and so the limitations seem more apparent.\u00c2\u00a0 There&#8217;s a lot of gore and violence that are for their own sake, and the art&#8217;s not dynamic enough to make it visceral for me.\u00c2\u00a0 I did like the spooky tone in issue 3, but issue 4 is just a fight scene.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ll see how the first arc turns out.<\/p>\n<p><em>Captain America #41<\/em>, Brubaker, Epting, Magyar, D&#8217;Armata.\u00c2\u00a0 Continued high quality.\u00c2\u00a0 Hard to believe that Brubaker killed the title character 15 issues ago, and that there&#8217;s so much excitement in the book that one hardly notices he&#8217;s missing.\u00c2\u00a0 Well, that&#8217;s not quite true; I would like to see Cap back, but this book is continually solid.<\/p>\n<p><em>Doktor Sleepless #8<\/em>, Ellis &amp; Rodriguez.\u00c2\u00a0 As the first book ends, there are revelations galore, not all of which can be taken at face value.\u00c2\u00a0 Still, there&#8217;s plenty going on; some mysteries explained (though perhaps not resolved) and some new angles revealed.\u00c2\u00a0 Lots of words this issue, but perhaps a telling image or two.\u00c2\u00a0 I think that Rodriguez&#8217;s clean art could be used to greater effect.\u00c2\u00a0 The images seem drawn to spec rather than being a result of collaboration, but that may be my poor vision.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of interesting ideas here about what&#8217;s sane and what&#8217;s real.\u00c2\u00a0 Fun stuff.<\/p>\n<p><em>Secret Six #1<\/em>, Simone, Scott,  Hazlewood.\u00c2\u00a0 Whee-ha this was fun: it&#8217;s everything Gravel isn&#8217;t.\u00c2\u00a0 A cast of dysfunctional but strangely likable villains stumbling toward some kind of team\/family bond, an eerie opponent, and an impossible jailbreak on the horizon.\u00c2\u00a0 These are genuinely broken people, but you can&#8217;t help but root for them as they feel their way through life (and perhaps toward each other).\u00c2\u00a0 It helps that the dialog is whip-smart and that the images reveal the minds behind the words. The words and pictures make these people sympathetic and real, even though they&#8217;re not admirable.
