{"id":313,"date":"2008-05-26T21:11:57","date_gmt":"2008-05-27T05:11:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=313"},"modified":"2008-05-26T21:11:57","modified_gmt":"2008-05-27T05:11:57","slug":"into-the-longbox-week-of-crotchetyness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=313","title":{"rendered":"Into the Longbox: week of crotchetyness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Will Eisner&#8217;s The Spirit #17<\/em>, Aragones, Evanier, Amancio, Austin.\u00c2\u00a0 These guys continue to get the Spirit himself to ring pretty true, but to make me wonder who the supporting cast is.\u00c2\u00a0 This issue turns Ellen Dolan into a one-dimensional clingy man-grabber rather than the intelligent, capable woman I prefer to see.\u00c2\u00a0 It makes me sad to see sub-<em>I Love Lucy<\/em> characterization of her after Cooke&#8217;s more nuanced treatment.\u00c2\u00a0 To add injury to insult, Ellen&#8217;s drawn as anatomically impossible, and not in a good way.\u00c2\u00a0 Not my favorite issue.<\/p>\n<p><em>Captain America #38<\/em>, Brubaker, Epting, Perkins, D&#8217;Armata.\u00c2\u00a0 Man, you know it&#8217;s going to be a long week when the best you can say about <em>Captain America <\/em>is that it was a superior super-hero book.\u00c2\u00a0 I mean it is and everything, but nothing sparkled too much for me.\u00c2\u00a0 Though, is it just me or is Dr. Faustus beginning to look like he&#8217;s running the show?\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;d swear I saw him talk back to the Red Skull and the Skull took it, which is <em>not<\/em> SOP.\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe not such a dead issue after all&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>Grendel: Behold the Devil #7<\/em>, Matt Wagner.\u00c2\u00a0 What in the world happened <em>here<\/em>?\u00c2\u00a0 Did Wagner just defuse the whole tension of his narrative to give me a 12-page recap of the 80&#8217;s <em>Grendel<\/em> series?\u00c2\u00a0 Why would anyone do that??? I&#8217;m enough of a completist to come back and see Hunter snuff the two red herrings next issue, but I don&#8217;t know why anyone else would.\u00c2\u00a0 I know Wagner&#8217;s usually more interesting than this, but I really don&#8217;t see the game here.
