{"id":2674,"date":"2018-10-13T16:02:56","date_gmt":"2018-10-14T00:02:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=2674"},"modified":"2018-10-13T16:02:56","modified_gmt":"2018-10-14T00:02:56","slug":"review-from-beirut-to-jerusalem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=2674","title":{"rendered":"Review: From Beirut to Jerusalem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thomas Friedman spent years in the Middle East as a New York Times reporter who deeply absorbed the lay of that land in the 80&#8217;s.\u00a0 <em>Beirut<\/em> is part reporting, part memoir from that time.\u00a0 My impression was that it presents the facts from his solid reporting alongside his opinions, impressions, and feelings about those times.\u00a0 I think there&#8217;s considerable value in all of these, but of course, proper calibration is key.<\/p>\n<p>I found his description of the Assad regime&#8217;s destruction of Hama and subsequent massacre in 1981 eye-opening.\u00a0 I was alive when it happened, but don&#8217;t recall the kind of outcry such events would deserve.\u00a0 For me the massacre is in a crack between history and lived experience, and I completely failed to see it.\u00a0 <em>Beirut<\/em> was worth it for Friedman&#8217;s harrowing chapter on that massacre.
