{"id":1791,"date":"2013-08-11T15:51:11","date_gmt":"2013-08-11T23:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=1791"},"modified":"2013-08-11T15:51:11","modified_gmt":"2013-08-11T23:51:11","slug":"review-off-to-be-the-wizard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=1791","title":{"rendered":"Review: Off To Be The Wizard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I know Scott Meyer from his excellent webcomic, <a href=\"http:\/\/basicinstructions.net\/\">The Basic Instructions<\/a>. <em>Instructions\u00a0<\/em>showcases Meyer&#8217;s snappy dialog, so when he published a novel I checked it out.<\/p>\n<p><em>Off To Be the Wizard <\/em>shares <em>Twilight<\/em>&#8216;s strong wish-fulfillment component. <em>Wizard<\/em> is about nerds who learn to control reality with their cell phones and become medieval wizards and <em>Twilight<\/em>&#8216;s about a teen girl who falls in love with a magical brooding vampire.\u00a0 Clearly these are authors giving their audience a world they want to live in more than a literary experience. I enjoyed both <em>Wizard<\/em> and <em>Twilight<\/em>, so maybe I&#8217;m a target for this stuff.<\/p>\n<p>It was a fun story.\u00a0 There were twists and turns, and the characters were all likeable and reasonable as well. There&#8217;s even some commentary on the social dynamics of the tech world.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, it&#8217;s a pretty well done fantasy story for nerds, heavy on the wish fulfillment.\u00a0 It&#8217;ll make an airline flight more pleasant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know Scott Meyer from his excellent webcomic, The Basic Instructions.
