{"id":1719,"date":"2013-05-26T20:56:06","date_gmt":"2013-05-27T04:56:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=1719"},"modified":"2013-05-26T20:56:06","modified_gmt":"2013-05-27T04:56:06","slug":"review-the-burn-palace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=1719","title":{"rendered":"Review: The Burn Palace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stephen Dobyns really impressed me with\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/BBC\/mouldering98.html#m98-n\"><em>The Church of Dead Girls<\/em><\/a> a few years ago.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the kind of book that makes you read anything you see an author put out after it to see how powerful his work can be.\u00a0 The followup, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/BBC\/mouldering00.html#m00-h\"><em>Boy in The Water<\/em><\/a> also had its pleasures. <em>The Burn Palace<\/em> is another thriller that ripples out from an eerie initial murder.<\/p>\n<p>I enjoyed many aspects of <em>The Burn Palace<\/em>.\u00a0 The plot is lean and propulsive and the characters are all well drawn and interesting.\u00a0 The setting is well realized and the writing is powerful.\u00a0 It is diverting in every way.<\/p>\n<p>What it doesn&#8217;t have is the haunting initial image and mounting dread of <em>Girls<\/em> or the meditation on evil present in <em>Boy<\/em>. This seems like a good thriller without any other agenda. It is enjoyable but not nearly so memorable as some of Dobyns&#8217;s best work.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no sin for a thriller to be unfavorably compared to <em>The Church of Dead Girls<\/em>.
