{"id":1514,"date":"2012-08-19T20:47:29","date_gmt":"2012-08-20T04:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=1514"},"modified":"2012-08-19T20:47:29","modified_gmt":"2012-08-20T04:47:29","slug":"review-some-remarks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=1514","title":{"rendered":"Review: Some Remarks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Some Remarks<\/em> is a very mixed bag of Neal Stephenson&#8217;s shorter writings.\u00a0 Stephenson&#8217;s novels are usually tomes, so it&#8217;s interesting to see some of his shorter work.\u00a0 But then about a third of the book is an epic article for <em>Wired<\/em> that describes laying an undersea telecom cable, so shorter is relative; the article is as long as a novelette.<\/p>\n<p>One of the things I enjoy about Stephenson&#8217;s writing is that he often sees commonplace things in new ways, combined with a close correlation between the things he and I think are commonplace.\u00a0 This collection treats me to his take on the <em>Star Wars<\/em> movies as well as the aforementioned telecom cables.\u00a0 We look at similar things and I like the way he sees them.<\/p>\n<p>As much as I enjoy his writing, I can&#8217;t really recommend this as a starting place.\u00a0 The topics, formats, length, and genres of the pieces vary widely.\u00a0 There are short stories, addresses, interviews, articles and a book foreword.
