{"id":1112,"date":"2011-05-18T22:13:21","date_gmt":"2011-05-19T06:13:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=1112"},"modified":"2011-05-18T22:13:21","modified_gmt":"2011-05-19T06:13:21","slug":"review-246-aftershock-stories-from-the-japan-earthquake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lunabase.org\/~faber\/blog\/?p=1112","title":{"rendered":"Review: 2:46 Aftershock: Stories from the Japan Earthquake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>2:46 Aftershock<\/em> is very much an artifact of its time, specifically it is an Internet-created anthology of short descriptions of the 11 Mar 2011 earthquake and its effect on the residents.\u00a0 It is being sold to raise money for the Red Cross relief efforts.<\/p>\n<p>It is a remarkable emotional collage of the reactions of these people to a seminal event in their lives.\u00a0 Each entry is concise and evocative.\u00a0 The topics range from how the author&#8217;s core values have survived a terrifying event, to thoughts about how the media served and didn&#8217;t serve the people, to whether an author would live in a high-rise again. Taken together, the pieces form a vivid snapshot of how a life-changing moment impinged on this community.<\/p>\n<p>If I were to pick a nit, it would probably be that many of these pieces are from non-native Japanese.\u00a0 But that would be a nit.\u00a0 This book captures the reaction of this community, and its unfair to gripe about the composition of a group that produces a work of this power.<\/p>\n<p>It is only fair to mention that one of my good friends, <a href=\"http:\/\/rdvlivefromtokyo.blogspot.com\/\">Rod Van Meter<\/a>, is a contributor.<\/p>\n<p>Strongly recommended.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2:46 Aftershock is very much an artifact of its time, specifically it is an Internet-created anthology of short descriptions of the 11 Mar 2011 earthquake and its effect on the residents.\u00a0 It is being sold to raise money for the Red Cross relief efforts.
